DBM is dead, long live, well, any other rule set really. I have taken my chance and run screaming into the hills in search of a set of rules that don’t require the memory of an IBM mainframe, the measuring skills of a quantity surveyor and the rosetta stone to translate the Barkerese!
Tried Armati, I like it, it is a different feel to DBM and Vis Bellicai. It plays faster, has nice mechanisms and is fun, but not enough fun.
Tried Vis Bellicia, liked Vis Bellicia, probably won’t change from Vis Bellicia. Fun games that “feel” right.
Field of Glory, out now! Well I’ve got the rules and they read well, but judgement is reserved until I actually get a game in!
Update: Well I’ve played a few games and it is definitely an improvement over DBM. These games were played at a couple of competitions and while they were not as hard work as DBM, I still didn’t enjoy them. I feel that this is probably a function of the competition mind set (which I do not possess) and I’ll probably get a better feel for the rules as a general set with a few non comp games, perhaps scenario based. Time will tell.
